BC Family Doctor Month

Family doctors are there through life’s biggest moments – supporting patients from birth through every stage of life. They build long-term relationships, provide comprehensive care, and advocate for better health outcomes in every corner of our province.

Their impact is so much more than individual appointments, it ripples through families, communities, and generations.

Every May 19, we mark Family Doctor Day to recognize the commitment, compassion, and care of BC family physicians. But one day simply doesn’t reflect the depth of their impact.

Happy BC Family Doctor Day!

BC Family Doctor Day, in line with World Family Doctor Day, is a time to celebrate all family physicians across British Columbia: those in urban centres, rural communities, and remote regions; those who work in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, long term care facilities, boardrooms, classrooms, and the many other environments where family physicians practice and teach.

We’re proud to share that for the seventh consecutive year, the BC Government has recognized our request to officially proclaim May 19 as BC Family Doctor Day. See the 2025 proclamation here, and read the official statement from Health Minister Josie Osborne here.

We’re also pleased to have teamed up with our partners at BC Family Doctors again this year to share a joint video message of recognition, celebration and, most importantly, of hope.

BC family physicians: we see you; we support you, and we thank you!

Advocacy Day at the Legislature

On May 7, we visited the BC Legislature in Victoria and met face-to-face with MLAs and government leaders. Our goal? To advocate for meaningful change that strengthens family medicine and patient care for the long term.

Family physicians create a ripple effect throughout communities, and the wider health care system. When they’re supported, hospitals see fewer admissions, specialists receive less referrals, and patients experience better health outcomes. That’s why we’re advocating for smarter spending – not more spending. Refocusing resources to enable effective primary care delivery is a cost-saving investment that benefits everyone.

This is about more than budgets or policies. It’s about the people behind them and the impact that our achievable solutions can have on the lives of family physicians and British Columbians.

Awards Celebration

Our Awards Celebration is the only event in BC dedicated to recognizing and championing the vital work of family physicians and family practice residents across the province.

Last year’s event was truly special, bringing together colleagues, mentors, family, and friends for an evening of connection, recognition, and joy. The room was filled with heartfelt speeches, standing ovations, and moments of shared pride in the power of family medicine. Watch the video below to relive the magic!

On May 15, we honoured the outstanding contributions of the 2025 BCCFP Award Recipients, including BC Family Physician of the Year and the five recipients of the patient-nominated My Family Doctor Award.

With Kevin Lim as our emcee, it was a meaningful night of connection, recognition, and celebration – and we were honoured to have once again Premier David Eby as a special guest.

Thank you to all those who joined us in this special evening!
